Details: Amazon.ca Ken Burns, the American filmmaker, has created a good deal of interest–and controversy–with his epic documentary, Jazz. This sampler from the 22-CD series associated with the film tackles the daunting task of representing some six decades of music in 20 selections, ranging from Duke Ellington’s 1928 classic « The Mooche » to the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra’s 1992 version of another Ellington orchestra tune, « Take The ‘A’ Train ». Dizzy Gillespie’s and Charlie Parker’s « Groovin’ High », Thelonious Monk’s riff blues « Straight, No Chaser » and Miles Davis’s modal masterpiece « So What » are among the greatest hits compiled here, while Louis Armstrong’s down-home treatment of Hoagy Carmichael’s « Star Dust » and Duke Ellington’s rousing « Cotton Tail » show why they are the alpha and the omega of jazz. Aside from the instrumentalists that have dominated jazz, the diverse styles of Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan form a broad perspective on jazz singing. Although the documentary and this sampler omit the avant-garde and other important types of jazz, this is, overall, good one-stop shopping for those just getting into the groove. –Eugene Holley Jr.
